A Novel Therapy for Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease

Researchers at the University of Florida have designed a system they believe may be helpful in treating disabling "on dopaminergic freezing" in Parkinson's disease.  DBS leads will be placed into 4 areas of the brain and the brain signature patterns will be identified at precisely the same time as freezing occurs.  The aim of the project is to develop a technology to break freezing episodes.  The project called a closed loop deep brain stimulation system for treatment of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease was recently funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
