The 7 types of "rest" critical to embed in our Parkinson's day

“Rest” is as important as action. We pick Dr. Dalton-Smith’s brain on the 7 types of rest we can employ in Parkinson’s.

Who is Saundra Dalton-Smith?

Saundra Dalton-Smith MD is a physician, researcher and the author of the book "Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity." We loved this article and TEDx talk and wanted to share the highlights of both here. https://ideas.ted.com/the-7-types-of-rest-that-every-person-needs/

We have all been feeling exhausted, especially around the holiday season. I have often wondered why just getting a few good night’s sleep does not change my level of tiredness. According to the article and TEDx talk we need rest in these seven areas.

1.     Physical rest-

Passive rest through sleep or active rest through restorative activities like yoga, massage, or stretching.

2.     Mental rest-

Schedule short breaks through out your work day  — every two hours and just slow down.

3.     Sensory rest-

We all need a break from the screens, zoom calls, bright lights, background noise, multiple conversations. Close your eyes, unplug your devices

4.     Creative rest-

Enjoying nature, arts, creating awe-inspiring experiences like hiking to the top of a mountain to enjoy the awesome view

5.     Emotional rest-

Having the time and space to freely express your feelings and cut back on people pleasing.

6.     Social rest-

Being unable to differentiate relationships that revive us from relationships that exhaust us; surround yourself with more positive and supportive people.

7.     Spiritual rest-

Ability to connect beyond the physical and mental and feel a deep sense of belonging, love, acceptance and purpose; engage in something greater than yourself, something that brings you purpose and sense of belonging and love- add prayer, meditation, something with a sense of community.
