Waiting: Lessons from the Bedside

Waiting…

A former high school and current college basketball superstar waits anxiously for his chance to get back into the game. He has been on the bench for a year now, and he waits, not with his teammates, but with strangers. Each day I wait with him. You never know when you are going to meet your next good friend. Together, but also separately, we prayed in our own way for the success of his new bone marrow.

This poem appears in the Book, Lessons from the Bedside.

A live reading from the author on Facebook Live.

Waiting

Sadly I wait for a new start.

My life has become too narrow.

Take out what is wrong, but leave my heart.

Will it be enough, this new marrow.

I want you to remember my smile.

It will never change.

My heart has run a lifetime of miles.

Memories I will not exchange.

I will make it either way.

As long as you are by my side.

My feelings are the same each day.

Only together will we reach full stride.

We may have reached our last mile.

By my side I see you smile.

Stay with me for a while,

Claim your place in my heart.
