How to prevent rotator cuff and shoulder injuries in Parkinson's disease

It turns out that we encounter a large number of preventable shoulder injuries in Parkinson’s disease. Here are a few tips to prevent tearing a rotator cuff or experiencing an orthopedic injury with your Parkinson’s disease.

Here are a few tips:

  • Limit or avoid exercise overhead or exercises where the arm is rotated backwards also called external rotation.

  • Do not try to lift weights above the level of the shoulder.

  • Be careful of kettle bells or any weights that are swung above the level of the shoulder.

  • Even though we recommend not weight bearing above the level of the shoulder that does not mean that you should stop stretching the entire shoulder joint.
