Are my Parkinson's medications properly absorbing?

This week’s video blog tip of the day is about how to check to be sure your Parkinson’s medications are properly absorbing.

One potential measure is using a nuclear medicine test, called a gastric emptying test. They give you a little dye and simply wait to see how long it takes to exit your stomach. If the dye takes a long time— consider that maybe your medications are also delayed—and this may be resulting in diminished symptomatic effects.

Remember certain conditions like diabetes can be associated with a diminished stomach emptying.

If you have had Parkinson’s for a while and are not sure whether or not your Parkinson’s medications are absorbing you may consider this test.

One other tip…if your dyskinesia disappears or you never get dyskinesia— consider the possibility of a gastric emptying issue (not always the case, but ask your doc).
