Sinking Thoughts: Lessons from the Bedside

A roofer and a former garbage man from Homosassa Springs, FL lies in his bed talking to his four roommates. His body quivers like the water in the lake near his home used to as he skipped stones over its surface as a child. His thoughts continue to fade as he is losing control over his body and mind. He knows he only has a few skips left.

This poem appears in the book Lessons from the Bedside.

Sinking Thoughts

The message ripples,

Travels courageously,

Images stippled,

Fading desperately.

Memories skip,

Seeking life,

Quiet lips,

Hide his strife.

Velocity slows,

Time unchanged,

The soul grows,

As memories exchange.

Stone is heavy,

Weight is no longer bearable,

Submerged but free,

Sinking is not terrible.

This poem appears in the book Lessons from the Bedside.
